N.K. Jemisin is one of the most celebrated science fiction writers of our generation. The first author to win the HUGO award for best novel in three consecutive years as well as the first to win for all three novels in a trilogy. If that is not inspiring to debut authors of a trilogy, well than nothing is!
In Jemisin’s Stone Sky, the last volume in her Broken Earth trilogy, reluctant heroine Essun who has the ability to harness the energy of the Earth is still on the search for her missing daughter. In this last instalment Jemisin reveals the narrator, the mysterious Stone Eater Hoa and how he originated. Much can be learned by observing Jemisin’s ingenuity, specifically how she divulges information to the reader, not to mention the overarching issues she champions through the story itself. “Her books have abstracted real-life race issues in a way that serves to magnify the truth.” – The Washington Post
A background in psychology, her emphasis on character development, portraying them as three dimensional, is something we have also prioritized in our debut novel Percivious Insomnia. And we promise to stay the course in Percivious Origins.
N.K. Jemisin is currently offering a MasterClass we recommend checking out. Her insight, talent and unique perspective is invaluable. As she mentions in her trailer, “You aren’t stuck in the past while you are writing fantasy. You aren’t stuck in space while you are writing science fiction. A lot of the things we think of as science fiction are actually fantasy. For example Star Wars. What’s the force? You can call it magic. It’s space magic.”
We couldn’t agree with her more, and as our story continues in Percivious Origins our dedication to plausible science while remaining character driven, is what we believe will set our trilogy apart.
