Function Over Fashion

So…I hear that my lovely co-author is starting up a new blog season dedicated to her favourite pastime. Shopping…I mean fashion.
As far as I am concerned, the hospital delivers all the fashion one could ever require, and the best part is…that it’s free.
One of the best things about a uniform is that it is mindless. I never waste a moment deciding what to wear. But of greatest importance is the symbol of the uniform. My clothing sends a message to those around me, most importantly my patients and their parents. Expectations and conversations take a certain direction based on how I look and what I wear.
While I do not share in JJ Cook’s love of style, I will say that I do appreciate her attention to detail, which extends far beyond garments and well into her writing. On many occasions, sentences that will knock you off your feet come from her desire to write not a memorable phrase but an exceptional one. Over time I have recognized this trait throughout our lives in what she wears, how she decorates, the gifts she gives, the celebrations she plans and overall the devotion she bestows on those she loves.
So from my perspective, fashion represents a lot more than just something that covers your back. It is a communication to those around us and it carries with it a signature of one’s purpose and one’s soul.
