Megan Hess is the perfect bridge between our inspirational children’s authors and our next season of Wonder Women – The Wonder Women of Fashion.
She is an acclaimed art director, fashion illustrator and author who works with some of the most prestigious designers and luxury brands around the world, such as Chanel, Dior, Louis Vuitton, Tiffany & Co. etc.
In 2006 Megan illustrated the New York Times number one selling book, ‘Sex and The City’. After the release of Candace Bushnell’s book, Megan was catapulted onto the world stage and began illustrating portraits for the New York Times, Italian Vogue and Vanity Fair Magazine.
When Megan started illustrating portraits for TIME magazine they described her work as “Love at first sight. Megan has a unique way of capturing a likeness while also conveying a sense of the person through her line work. And her execution is perfect.”
Megan has written and illustrated 16 bestselling fashion books: Fashion House, The Dress, Coco Chanel, New York, Paris, Iconic and Elegance. She has also written five books in her much-loved series for children, Clarice the Chicest Mouse in Paris.
It would be an understatement to say that I have been greatly influenced by fashion. Not just the inspirational creations that grace runways season after season, designer after designer, but what has always fascinated me the most are the artists (designers and artisans) that make these works of art possible.
Vogue has done such an amazing job of showcasing the artisans behind the museum worthy works of art that blow our mind on the runway. These are the people that represent the author, the writer and the editors they work with. The ones who spent hundreds of hours sewing on hundreds of thousands of sequins. They are us, as we edit word after word, sentence after sentence, until we get it just right. It is this labour of love that is reflected in the finished product. In my opinion, that is what makes it so special. And when you experience the work of Megan Hess it is incredible because she is able to capture the whole thing. Not just the gown on the runway, but the vision its designer imagined and its artisan brought to life.

–Her drawings are indeed so inspired and classic! From the tip of her Montblanc pen to the watercolour or gouache hues she chooses, her work truly reflects the beauty that the fashion world expresses.
