Child’s Play
Posted on August 1, 2021
A lot of us are still reading and more importantly enjoying children’s books. That is because most of them, and especially the good ones, ring with truth.
Some books stand out more than others, and for myself it happens to be ones that are not only written but also illustrated by the same multitalented individual.
Graeme Base is one of our favourite children’s authors and illustrators. His award winning novels are brimming with poetic verses with absolutely incredible illustrations to match.
We aren’t the only ones to be inspired! Base’s The Sign of the Seahorse was adapted as an opera by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. His Animalia has been made into a television series complete with its own iPhone app. And he has won the children’s picture book of the year award twice, for Animalia and The Eleventh Hour.
Whoever said children’s books are child’s play was sorely mistaken…
